Only 21% of managers rate their line manager/CEO’s as highly effective according to a Feb 2012 CMI national survey across all organisational sectors, with 43% rating them as either ineffective or highly ineffective.
Retail, engineering and local government were perceived to be the worst performing sectors.
High performing organisations across all sectors were found to have higher levels of management effectiveness, spend more on appropriate management and leadership development (MLD) and employ more highly engaged employees.
The six most effective forms of MLD, rated by managers themselves, were as follows:
- Postgraduate business school qualification eg MA / MBA – 82% used by 18% of organisations
- Professional bodies qualifications eg CMI – 60% used by 38% of organisations
- Chartered Manager – 56% used by 9% of organisations
- External management/leadership programmes – 53% used by 28% of organisations
- External coaching – 48% used by 19% of organisations
- On-the-job experience – 46% used by 52% of organisations
with the most popular here being the least effective! The majority of expenditure was between £250 and £2500 with a mean spend per manager of £1414 per annum.
The report goes on to outline the top five overall reasons that organisations invest in MLD as follows:
- Achieve organisational objectives – 62%
- Manage change – 49%
- Improve managers performance – 47%
- Increase competitive advantage – 46%
- Support business growth – 41%
and finally finds a significant link between upper quartile performing organisations and their commitment and investment in MLD.
