A provocative title maybe but the Apprenticeship Levy has significantly disrupted the learning and development strategy in a large number of organisations. If it hasn’t in yours yet, then why not?
The UK has a critical skills shortage and subsequent productivity problem. The Apprenticeship Levy has been introduced as one way to overcome this long term skills crisis. However, anecdotal evidence so far would suggest that this is not entirely the case, and it may actually be counter productive. This event is intended to be an open discussion where we can establish reality and suggest alternatives if they are required.
A Government Commons education and business select committee, the British Chambers of Commerce and the Institute for Fiscal Studies have all expressed various concerns about the Levy. So, since the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy, can we determine amongst others;

By 2020, one in three of the working age population will be 50 or older. By 2030, half of all adults will be 50 or older.
The UK is facing a massive skills gap and older workers are vital to filling it but yet less than a fifth of over-50’s receive workplace training compared to two fifths for the over 35’s. More than 50% of the over 50’s are forced out of their jobs, much higher than any other age group.
Leading employers like Barclays, Aviva, Atos, Mercer and the Co-operative Group have pledged to increase the number of their older staff by 12% within five years.
The over 50’s have so much to offer, but how do we make the most of their talent, knowledge, experience and goodwill in a rapidly evolving world?

Who knows what we will discuss at our final event of 2016, supported by FSB Kirklees as well as the CMI on this occasion, but as ever, we expect lively debate and discussion throughout!
